This is a really excellent question, because this is one of those ways we can see a little of how God, the Creator of the Universe, and our personal saviour is. No one took away Mary’s freedom to choose right from wrong, but she always chose to do the right thing. In all of creation, God found one person whom He knew was always going to choose the right thing and not to sin – and so He gave her a special vocation [role] as the Mother of His Son. Just because God knows every moment, every second, every action of our lives – He chooses not to act or direct that because freedom really is that important, and it’s not that He can’t be God another way, but this is the way love is so great a gift – it’s free, it’s us giving because we want to, it’s us acting as we act out of love. If God made Mary not to sin, or so she couldn’t we wouldn’t be celebrating her because the act of love given in her being Jesus Mother, the perfect Christian would have no merit in it; it wouldn’t be praiseworthy.
