A Grade 8 student asks: Why are we Catholic?

We believe that when Jesus Christ commissioned the Apostles to “go make disciples of all the nations”, and gave the Apostles and the disciples the mission, the Church was formed.  We believe that this is the Catholic Church.  The word “catholic” means universal, so when we think of this, we have to think of what brings Christians together as followers and disciples of Jesus Christ.  However, we use the term to refer to Catholic Christians [most of us here in North America are Roman Catholic] and we have very particular beliefs of what it means to worship and follow Jesus.  Our roots can be tied to Jesus and the Apostles and disciples, so in the 2,000 years since this time, we have followed constant traditions and practices, constant beliefs.  For most of us, unless we became Catholics on our own [converts], our parents, grandparents, and a long line of descendants were Catholic as well.  The same with our clergy, priests ordained by bishops could trace their lines back to the original bishops who were the Apostles.

So after all of that; we’re Catholic because we want to be, because our family has helped us to learn how to follow Jesus and when I say family, I mean the people at home, and the people at church and school.  We never criticize others for differing beliefs, but we never turn away or deny our beliefs either.
