A Grade 7 student asks: Why is the Catholic Church against abortion?

We just hear in the news the Catholic Church is against abortion, but there are many people Catholic and non-Catholic who are not in favour of abortion, but there is something greater than this to be said.  This is a big question, and the people who feel we should have it believe we should have the right to make choices, to not tell women what they can do, and there are many other arguments that I’m sure you think will make sense.  But we have to respect all life, no matter how that life came to be, and Catholics and others are speaking for the child who can’t speak for themselves.  As Catholic Christians we stand up for all life, for people from the womb, right through until they die their natural death, no matter what physical or mental issues they may have – we are all beautiful children of God and deserve to be regarded this way.

My mom was 18 when I was conceived, and her whole life changed- not always in a good way I’m sure.  She was poor, she wasn’t married, her parents weren’t really there to support her and she had every reason to consider an abortion.  But she didn’t and even though my mom wasn’t a Catholic, when she died in 2004 she told my sister and I that we were the best part of her life.

I’m glad that even though life was tough for my mom, that she said yes to God and had me and my sister, and even though having an abortion might have made her life easier – I know I wouldn’t be here.
