A Grade 5 student asks: I find that I wander off and have a hard time paying attention at Mass.

Believe it or not, this is not uncommon.  You might be surprised to know that even though I fight it – I too wander off at Mass (really at the readings because I’m praying the rest of the Mass for all of us) so we just have to try our best to pay attention, but God knows that sometimes other things get in the way.  A good trick to try is to have something to say to God.  Peter, James and John went up the mountain with Jesus and Peter remarked “it’s good to be here”.  He said this because he recognized that it was an amazing thing just that He had the privilege to be with Jesus went He spoke to Moses and Elijah.  We could say the same thing, because like Peter, we know it’s a great privilege to be with Jesus in the Mass, receiving Him, being with other Christians, receiving all of God’s love as He gives us.  Think of something to say in the moment you realized you spaced out and trust me, God will be very pleased that you said it and don’t worry about it!
