I don’t think I’ve met anyone [myself included] that has been so completely independent that they never needed anyone to help them. We all need role models and mentors and if we figure out that we do better to have them – life can be really amazing. This goes with our faith. I had a sponsor who helped me to live my daily life as a Catholic; we were both adult men [I was 31 when I became Catholic] who worked and had responsibilities, and he helped me to see how I could live my faith. I had a mentor when I was becoming a priest, we had a lot in common and I really loved and respected him. This is ultimately what a sponsor is; a person who will walk with us in faith. As Christians, an important part of our faith is relationship as the Son of God came to show us that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit form a perfect relationship and we grow closer to God in our relationship with Him and with each other. We need to really think about who we choose as sponsors, and we should choose someone who we respect, who has lived their faith and who can help us to grow in our faith.
