A Grade 7 student asks: Do We Have to Believe in the Whole Bible?

Yes, the whole Bible is the inspired Word of God.  Our understanding of what is said can make it seem as though God is saying something that He is not.  Throughout human history, God revealed Himself to specially chosen men and women who recorded for us what we know as Sacred Scripture.

I think it’s important for us as Christians to read the Gospel’s first for a couple of reasons.  First of all, Jesus who grew in wisdom and knowledge as a boy through to manhood in His own understanding of the Sacred Scriptures of Old [Testament] reveals many of the things we need to know.  When I was younger, and before I was a Christian I thought that the way to read the Bible was like any other book – cover to cover.  As a committed Christian, I’ve really tried to know and understand and read over and over the Gospels and New Testament writings.  I’ve also come to understand more about the Old Testament this way.  While I was studying to be a priest, I came to really appreciate the Old Testament because it helps me to understand even more what Jesus revealed for all of us.  Also [and I hope you can all do this one day] I travelled to the Holy Land where Jesus lived and that made me really appreciate the whole Bible.

The whole Bible offers us truth, not every book is written the same way, but there is truth to be found in every single book and verse of the Bible.  Part of why we come together as a community of believers [church] is so that we can read the Bible with each other and grow in wisdom, knowledge and understanding together as God’s people.  It’s pretty hard to do that on our own.
